Green hydrogen

Green hydrogen is an important step in the implementation of our One Planet Plan. And it is one of the most important conditions for achieving the Dutch and European climate targets and reducing our dependence on imports of fossil energy from unstable regions.

In the coming years, Eneco wants to produce green hydrogen on a large scale in order to gradually phase out natural gas.

Advantages green hydrogen

The advantage of green hydrogen is that it offers a flexible solution for the storage and transport of energy and thus for the congestion of the electricity grid. In addition, no CO2 is released in the process.

NortH2

In early 2022, Eneco joined the green hydrogen consortium NortH2 as a partner. We see NortH2 as a great opportunity to further increase the sustainability of our production and supply to industrial customers.

NortH2 wants to make a substantial contribution to the Dutch and European climate goals through the rapid development of an integrated hydrogen chain that includes offshore wind energy and the production and storage of green hydrogen.

Together with Shell, Equinor and RWE, Eneco is part of the green hydrogen consortium, with Groningen Seaports as support partner. Projects of the scale of NortH2 are essential to achieve the climate objectives in time. We therefore want to be part of this consortium and take the necessary major steps together with partners.

What is green hydrogen?

Green hydrogen is produced from water using green electricity. The electrolysis process converts water (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) by adding electricity. Green hydrogen can be used as a raw material for e.g. fertiliser and synthetic fuels, as a fuel for high temperature applications in heavy industry and for domestic heating. In addition, it can be an energy source for (heavy) transport.
